  1. CAN YOU PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHICH OF THE NORMANDY BEACHES AND VENUES OF CELEBRATIONS WILL BE ‘OFF LIMITS’ TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC ON 6TH AND 7TH JUNE . I RAN INTO A TOTAL FIASCO OF INACCESSABILITY ONTHESE DATES DURING THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS AND WOULD PREFER TO AVOID A REPEAT PERFORMANCE

    MANY THANKS

    W DE BEER

  2. My brother was in the landings bringing troops and supplies to the beach on his 18th birthday. He will be 84 on June 6th 2009 and has heard of medals being given by the French government to all living veterans, is this true and can he receive a medal if he is not attending the actual ceremony in Arromanches on the day.
    Thank you, Roy Hutchinson

    1. Roy,
In my research and subsequent writings on my attendance at the 60th Anniversary, I came across this issue that you are inquiring. The French government issued them to Veterans for the 50th and then the program ran out of money and ended.
The interest was resurrected for the 60th, but as usual it took a lot of volunteerism and leg work. Basically, small groups were organized and with the advocacy of a Washington State Congressman, the medals were awarded. Since then, he lost the election. Wouldn’t you know it, the price for trying to be patriotic and recognize these ancient warriors.
I attended one of these ceremonies in Seattle on Bastille Day of 2004. Not a single politician, from the mayor of Seattle on up to Washington’s congressional delegation showed up. Thank God for the French Diplomatic Representatives. They knew what a sacrifice was made in their behalf. The Normans and coastal French are even more thankful. I hitchhiked and backpacked for 10 days around Normandy in honor of several D-Day Veterans. The way they treated me was as if I was one of those that assaulted the Nazi defenses.
Get in touch with me and I will send you what I have about getting your brother’s medal. 84?? He must have lied about his age to join up. Catch 22, he will probably be disqualified and severed from Vet benefits by some bumbling, bureaucratic boob in D.C.

  3. I’m doing some research on the D-Day commemorations in 2009 and need to find out who is organising the events. I’m particularly interested in finding the organisers of the parachute drop on Site of La Fiere in Saint-Mere-Eglise.

Hope to hear from you soon.

    Best

    Henrietta

      1. Thank you so much for passing on the details of the Tourist Office, I spoke to them this afternoon and they were very helpful.

        Best

  4. Dear Sir or Madam,

the diary of events shows that the 2 para drops over Ste mare Eglise will take place on 7 June – D-Day+1.

Is this correct? There will be no drops on D-Day itself?

    Kind regards,

    Graham Dinsdale

  5. thanks for this info, my grandfather landed on the beaches and lived to tell the tale, it’s an important part of my life 🙂

I will be coming to Normandy for the 65th
