Le Perche Antiques

Brocantes and Antique Shops of the Perche

UPDATE: See also our recent article on a nearby Antique and Architectural Salvage Yard

Do you like digging and scratting around second-hand shops, antique shops or boot sales for little treasures and bargains?  If so, the Perche region is made for you!

The Perche towns and villages are thick with antique and second-hand shops (“brocantes”), and every village has an annual attic clearance day (“vide grenier”) when the locals set up stalls in the village square to sell off their unwanted household objects.  There is an awful lot of rubbish at vide-greniers but occasionally you might unearth a bargain! For information on those see http://vide-greniers.org/ .

The Perche region was home to wealthy landowners in medieval times and they built quality residences with furniture to match – its myriad manor houses bear testimony to these past riches.  There have always been good antique shops selling desirable old wooden armoires and buffets with price tags to match, but more recently the antique and second-hand shops of the region have expanded their repertoires to cater for those with somewhat smaller budgets.  Nowadays many of them them sell not only antiques but also reproduction pieces, original art and decorative knick-knacks to decorate everyone’s home and garden in style.

In addition to its ten permanent “antiquaires” the town of Bellême also has an antiques market each weekend which attracts quite a crowd; Mortagne-au-Perche boasts 15 antique and second-hand shops; Nogent-le-Rotrou has another dozen.  And that is just a start – you’ll find brocantes and antique shops in many little villages besides.

There is also a major “Salon d’Antiquités et Brocantes” in Alençon every autumn – this year it is 25 to 27 October 2013.  There are also “professionals only” trade fairs at Le Mans every month http://www.deballagelemans.com/  which UK dealers can attend on presentation of a business card.

Below you’ll find a list of some of the brocantes near to us and a map showing their exact locations.

Here’s just a selection which featured recently in the magazine “Arts et Déco” for June 2012.  Most are open Saturdays and Sundays and a tour of the brocante and antique shops is ideal if the weather is inclement!

Do you know of any vide greniers etc week of 22nd to 27th July we are staying in La Perriere? Many thanks Bernie

    1. Best ask whoever you’re staying with at La Perrière – they should know what’s happening locally. There’s one near us at Bourg-le-Roi coming up on 22nd July. There’s another one near us at Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei but it’s Sunday the 29th July.

  2. Brilliant, I’m visiting the area this summer (4 weeks on Friday to be precise) – will have a nosey!
